Celebrating Love and All Families
In my practice, I have had the privilege of seeing and helping all kinds of families come to fruition. Single parents and couples alike –be they heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bi, trans-gendered or queer. It is wonderful that we live in a time where not only do we have the freedom to make the diverse kinds of families that we want to, but also amazing that we are able to.
That said, Dr. Beth Taylor from Olive Fertility Centre wrote an article for the Globe and Mail last week, speaking to the complicated process that same sex couples face when they want to have children. Often donor sperm and/or donor egg and/or surrogacy are required and the process can be long and complicated involving medical and psychological testing as well as legalities.
There is much Chinese Medicine can do to support the process for these couples, with pre-conception care to optimize the quality of egg, sperm and/or lining, as well as implantation, pregnancy, labour and birth support. Very importantly though, as the path to parenthood for LGBTQ couples can be so much more complicated, we find that often support with the enormous levels of stress is also necessary.
With our recent Family Day holiday and today being Valentines Day, I have been meditating on the meaning of Family and I just feel so happy and fortunate to be able to support the continuation of so many different love-lines... it truly is a blessing and an honor. Happy Valentines Day to all families!
